I live in rural Wallonia, nearest big town Bastogne (hardly that big...) so it's always a thrill to make the pilgrimage to Cactus at the Etoile centre for fresh fish other than river trout and farmed salmon, veggies other than tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers and so on. But my little country bumpkin eyes nearly popped out of my skull today when I went to Kirchberg Auchan for the first time! Whoot! Ingredients I've not seen since I last lived in a "real" place. Cuts of meet, varieties of cheese, olives, fruit and veggies and fish and seafood.
So, the reason I'm posting, is to let any other folk in the more rural reaches of Lux or just over the border, who may be starved for variety in their shops, know that it's worth the trip "to the big city" from time to time. And that's not to mention that fab Asian supermarkets across the other side of town.
And locals, could you please tell me, is the Kirchberg Auchan the biggest store? Or am I missing something even better! :-) Thanks!

Supermarket fun! (or am I odd?)
I really enjoyed your post! When returning from the USA to Luxembourg (suburb of the city), I notice the absence of a lot of choice in other areas (everyday items other than food), but the food stores are well stocked with lots of choice, as you say. I have made it over to the Auchan you mention. It might well be the largest store in the country. Just wanted to let you know I enjoyed your post. The practical little aspects of one's life sure can make a difference.
Where exactly are the Asian supermarkets you mention? I have not made it over there yet. I have been visiting my parents in Luxembourg once a year for the last few years but am considering moving back for a longer period and so appreciate info like this!
Thanks! :-)
The Asian supermarkets are on the station side, off ave de la Liberte. Ms Amy has all the info in her blog here: http://blogs.angloinfo.com/life-and-love-in-lux/2012/06/13/91/
By the way, if you like a great craft shops (also in short supply in rural Wallonia, although if I need a combine harvester or a trailer I'm in the right place) there's a fantastic, big one a couple of doors down from Asia Market.
Thanks for the info re. Asian shops. I'll have to check them out next time. As for craft shops, I'm an avid knitter, and the yarn/craft shops were the first shops I checked out ;-). The one you mention is fairly new and very similar to the Bastelkiste just a few streets away that has been around longer. I did visit both on my last trip over there in April (and will again!)
And what about this?
