Holiday Acommodation Options in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is a small country that can be crossed in a few hours. However, Luxembourg is well appreciated by holiday makers and many types of holiday accommodation are available for all tastes and budgets including hotels, self-catering apartments, youth hostels, campsites, as well as hiking huts and rural accommodation.

Tourist offices will provide assistance for booking hotels, campsites and other types of accommodation.

EcoLabel

Since 1999 Luxembourg has awarded Ecolabel certification to environmentally friendly hotels, gîtes, campsites and guest houses. Facilities with an Ecolabel take measures to save energy, water and other natural resources, minimise waste and the use of chemicals, and in general take any necessary measures to protect the environment. Ecolabel Luxembourg is part of the European "VISIT" initiative (Voluntary Initiatives for Sustainability In Tourism).

Hotels

Hotels are rated from one to five stars based on the Benelux Hotel Classification system. The classification system is not compulsory and hotels as well as youth hostels and guest houses may participate on a voluntary basis. A sign indicating a facility's rating is usually displayed on the front door.

There is a fixed set of criteria covering most aspects of comfort on which the ratings are based.

5 star: Outstanding
4 star: Highly superior hotel
3 star: Highly comfortable
2 star: Good standard
1 star: Average standard

Luxembourg has stringent laws regarding disabled access.

The HELP service provides holiday opportunities for those with disabilities as well as their carers. Various assistance as well as physical and occupational therapy is available at participating hotels. The Luxembourg Tourist Office can provide a list of accommodation for those with reduced mobility in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Bed & Breakfast and Rural Accommodation

There are only a few B&B (chambres d'hôtes) in the Grand Duchy which can be found on the gites.lu website. A few country accommodation options are also available, suitable for families. This is detached self-catering accommodation in a country setting.

Farms and rural holidays are available across Luxembourg. Farm-style lodgings provide independent accommodation within an operating farm.

Self Catering Apartments & Holiday Rentals

A list of holiday apartments and self catering rentals can be obtained from most Tourist Offices. This type of accommodation is classified with one to four ears of corn (épis). One ear of corn represents accommodation with basic amenities and four ears of corn represents luxury accommodation with superior facilities.

Campsites

The French word for campsite is camping. There are campsites in Luxembourg with varying facilities and standards. Most campsites are rated according to the Benelux classification, from one to five stars, although membership to the scheme is voluntary.

Campsites in the Ardennes and in Mullerthal also provide accommodation in hiking huts for those travelling on foot.

Youth Hostels & Backpackers

There are several youth hostels across the Grand Duchy. A youth hostel membership card is required to stay in a hostel or welcome stamps have to be purchased upon arrival.

The Hostelling International card offers additional benefits to members such as reduction for tourist attractions. Membership rates vary according to age.

Youth hostels in Luxembourg provide special full-board accommodation packages for hikers and cyclists. Packages are available for three or six days.
