Citizen Guides for Foreign Residents in Luxembourg

UK and US consulates provide services for citizens in need, including replacement of lost or stolen passports and help and advice in difficult situations.

Foreign Embassies exist to represent their nation to their host country nationals, providing information and services on trade, tourism and culture in the home state. All Embassies have a Consular Section which exists to provide information and services to its own nationals visiting or living in the host country.

Many country consulates recommend that citizens report their arrival so that their names can be added to a citizens' register.

The consular section of the British Embassy Luxembourg provides help for British nationals living in or travelling to Luxembourg. Many services are available for British citizens living in or travelling to Luxembourg. These include:

  • Registering births and deaths and issuing certified copies of certificates
  • Certifying documents
  • Providing help for those who are victims of a crime or in hospital
  • Providing contact details of doctors and lawyers

Passport services for British residents in Luxembourg are available from the Western European Passport Office at the British Consulate-General in Paris.

The UK government's Direct.gov website provides information online for Britons considering moving abroad and for those already there. It includes tax, health and education advice as well as a section on what to do when returning to the UK. 

US Citizens

The Embassy of the United States of America, Luxembourg has a website with information for American citizens living in Luxembourg. The US Citizens Service consular section provides passport services, registration of births of American citizens abroad, information on visas, federal benefits, notary services, adoptions, as well as offering emergency assistance to American citizens in distress. 

The US Embassy website also has information on marriage, hospitals, doctors and pharmacies in Luxembourg and a list of English-speaking attorneys and translators.

Voting in US elections

US citizens living overseas are eligible to vote by absentee ballot in the general presidential elections. The Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) has complete information and online registration and absentee ballot request forms for the Federal Post Card Application (OFPCA). They provide a toll-free number for citizens outside of the US to call for information.

Irish Citizens

The Embassy of Ireland in Luxembourg provides help and advice in emergency situations to Irish citizens resident or travelling in Luxembourg. The website has information on travel between Ireland and Luxembourg and has a section About Luxembourg with useful links for Irish citizens living in Luxembourg.
