Fishing in Luxembourg is very popular and is mostly practiced as a recreational activity. In order to fish in Luxembourg, a fishing permit (permis de pêche) is required. There are two types of fishing permit:
Permits are available for a fee to all residents or tourists aged 14 and over. Children under 14 may fish without a permit. They must be accompanied by a person who is over 18 and in possession of a valid border fishing permit when fishing in border waters. The permit must be carried at all times when fishing and must be accompanied by a passport or identity card. Inland Waters PermitFishing permits for inland waters are available from the District Commissioner office (Commissariat de District) in Luxembourg City, Diekirch and Grevenmacher and also from local administration offices in most communes including Clervaux, Differdange, Dudelange, Esch-sur-Alzette, Esch-sur-Sûre, Lake of the Upper Sûre and Vianden.
There are three types of inland waters permit available:
Night fishing in inland waters is prohibited. Nighttime is defined as follows:
Fish species available in inland waters include eel, grayling, char, rainbow trout, carp, roach, barbel and pike.
Border Fishing PermitsBorder permits are available for the following rivers:
Note: Fishing in the border waters of the Sûre river and Moselle river is not allowed from March to the middle of June. There are four types of border permits:

Fish species available in border waters include Californian Crayfish, pike, tench, brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, barbel, carp and nase.
